Commission for the City of Olympia Childcare Center. 1% for the Arts, 1996
The Olympia Childcare Center is a multi-use facility for numerous child care services. One percent of the moneys used for reconstruction of the old fire hall were dedicated to the arts. Together with another artist, Fish Fantasy, was designed and constructed after its selection in a competitive public process.

The tiling on the concrete walls surrounding the children's play area is among my contributions.
The longest wall is 4' x 28'. The bottom of this wall is a mosaic of river rock, glass eggs, glass shells and starfish. The top portion of the wall has porcelain tiles that are glazed with a design of small fry recently hatched from the glass eggs. As they swim away toward the ocean they turned into adult salmon.

Detailed view of the corner wall, approximately 4' x 7', depicts fish turning
into flying fish. Click images for a larger version.

The next corner wall. 4' x 8' features clouds over water. This part
of the wall is surrounded by birds that have evolved from the
flying fish. Artist Debra Van Tuinen applying finishing touches to the wall.

The final wall is 4' x 4 1/2' and is a sunset over the water. It is a
bright wall with the colors the children enjoy and finishes the scene with
the coming of the night.

Duane Bullock of Superior Tile working on the tiling. He donated
his time and did an excellent job plus he was wonderful to work with.
